Steps to reproduce

To reproduce on-farm conditions of additive use, both trials used a commercial extruded fish feed (Flash Fish #03, Polinutri, Brazil). According to the manufacturer, the feed contained at least 450 g/kg crude protein and 90 g/kg ether extract, as well as thymol and carvacrol (15 mg/kg each), Pediococcus acidilactici (1 × 10⁹ CFU/kg), mannan-oligosaccharides (400 mg/kg) and beta-glucans (700 mg/kg); the complete guaranteed levels are given in Supplementary Table S1. The study therefore evaluated the effect of additional supplementation of a complete feed. The supplemented diet (MB) was obtained by adding 2 g/kg of a commercial microencapsulated product (Acidosan, Tecphy, Brazil) containing oregano and cinnamon essential oils, turmeric, tannin and a blend of organic acids; the proportions are not disclosed by the manufacturer because the formulation is proprietary. To bind the product to the pellets, a carboxymethylcellulose solution (CMC Plus, Phytobiotec, Brazil) at 4 g/L in water was used, left to hydrate for 12 to 24 h as recommended by the manufacturer. The additive was mixed into the solution, which was sprayed onto the feed at the manufacturer's recommended rate (20 to 40 mL per kg). The control diet received the same solution at the same rate without the additive, so that the two diets differed only in the presence of the microencapsulated product. The feeds were then dried at room temperature in an unheated forced-air oven to preserve the stability of the bioactive compounds, and stored refrigerated in individual 500 g containers, with new batches prepared as needed.
