Soundscape appraisal and prefrontal and temporal haemodynamics: an fNIRS laboratory dataset

Description

This is the analysis-ready dataset underlying a laboratory experiment relating subjective soundscape appraisal to cortical haemodynamics. Sixty-nine adults each heard four 30-second urban soundscape recordings spanning the four quadrants of the Comfort-Richness space, presented three times each in counterbalanced order across three sequences, in a single session of about twenty minutes. After every presentation the participant rated the recording on eight ICSAQ adjectives, from which the Comfort and Richness axes are computed. Cerebral oxygenation was recorded throughout by functional near-infrared spectroscopy over prefrontal/frontal, left-temporal and right-temporal regions, and the primary measure is the change in haemoglobin concentration in the 5 to 30 second window after stimulus onset, relative to a 10-second pre-stimulus baseline. The workbook holds the analysis-ready table of one row per participant and condition, the individual presentations averaged into it, the eight adjective ratings, the stimulus inventory, the channel-to-region mapping, a per-participant channel-quality mask auditing every channel against the raw recordings, per-channel concentrations for all three chromophores, and the acquisition record of marker times and stimulus onsets. The exported quality flags pass dead channels, so region-of-interest means must be aggregated through the mask: it excludes 289 of the 1,587 participant-by-channel cells plus one failed detector for every participant, leaving right temporal without a usable channel in 11 participants and left temporal in 2. Stimulus set and sequence order are between-participant counterbalancing factors and condition is within-participant. All sixty-nine participants provide ratings and fNIRS data; fifty-nine also completed WHO-5 well-being and 21-item noise-sensitivity questionnaires, so covariate analyses run on the smaller sample. Records carry anonymous participant identifiers only, with age reported in five-year bands. The dataset is released under CC BY 4.0 and should be cited together with the associated article.
