Steps to reproduce

The folder “data” contains all datasets necessary to run the models and replicate the results. No changes are required in that folder. The script main.r can be used to replicate most results. The user must choose a few options inside the script: 1. Set the working directory (line 4) to the location where your “Replication” folder is. 2. To replicate the full-sample results (Tables 1, 2, 6, 7 and Figures 1, 2), covering 2003–2024, no additional changes are needed. 3. To replicate the shorter-sample results (Table 8 and Figures 3, 5), covering 2004–2024, set "dta_raw1 = dta_raw_usa" instead of "dta_raw1 = dta_raw_full" (lines 232–233). 4. To replicate the results from Appendix I (Table 10 and Figure 12), follow instruction 3 above and additionally set "dta = dta_res" instead of "dta = dta_final" (lines 291–292). For the script appendix_F.r, set the working directory (line 4) as above. To replicate the full-sample results (Figures 6, 7), no additional changes are needed. To replicate the short-sample result (Figure 8), set "dta_raw1 = dta_raw_usa" instead of "dta_raw1 = dta_raw_full" (lines 232–233). For the scripts appendix_E.r, appendix_G.r and appendix_H.r, only the working directory (line 4) needs to be adapted. No other changes are required.
