Description

We collected rhizomatous plants from the field and measured fine root morphological traits, together with additional data (aboveground biomass, rhizome dry matter content, rhizome length). We tested whether there is a difference between fine root traits in young and old part of rhizome, our goal being to evaluate change of traits during ontogeny. We found small significant effect of root ontogeny (proxied by position along rhizome) on root tissue density. We also found that in species with longer rhizomes, specific root length as well as root diameter varied between young and old roots.

The data was collected following methodology described in the article "The position along rhizome as a surrogate for root age: effect on fine root traits".
