Description

The analysis uses a monthly Somalia dataset spanning January 2015 to December 2024 (T = 120). The domestic food price is the national food consumer price index from the Somalia National Bureau of Statistics (2015 = 100); world food and energy prices are the global price indices from FRED; the exchange rate is the Somali shilling per US dollar from the Central Bank of Somalia; and temperature and rainfall are drawn from the World Bank Climate Change Knowledge Portal. All price and exchange-rate series enter in natural logarithms, and the climate series are deseasonalised by subtracting their month-of-year means to form rainfall and temperature anomalies. From these anomalies we construct two climate-stress indicators: a drought state equal to one when the three-month moving average of the rainfall anomaly falls more than one standard deviation below its mean, and a sustained-heat state defined symmetrically for the temperature anomaly, yielding 21 drought and 19 heat months that match the documented 2016–17, 2020–21 and 2022–23 episodes. The file is completed by the two-month world-food-price change used in the interaction model and by dummies for the COVID-19 period, the Russia–Ukraine war, the 2022 structural break, and Somalia's Gu, Hagaa and Deyr growing seasons.
