Description

Mineral chemistry characterization by means of Electron Microprobe analysis in 9 basaltic samples are presented. This dataset comprises a total of 501 mineral chemical analysis which correspond to plagioclase (208 analysis), clinopyroxene (202 analysis), amphibole (64 analysis), opaque minerals (18 analysis), and alkali feldspar (9 analysis).

The initial sample processing was accomplished at the rock-sample preparation laboratories of the Geology Department at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). For the petrographic characterization and mineral chemistry data acquisition a number of rock thin sections (48 mm x 28 mm in size, and 30 μm thick) were prepared. Microscopic surveys were performed with a Leica DM LP device, fitted with a CCD camera for microphotographic image acquisition. Mineral major and trace elements concentrations were performed by means of Electron Microprobe analyses using a Cameca SX 100 instrument at the University of Oviedo. Operating conditions of the microprobe were: 10 s counting time (peak), ~10 nA beam current and 15 kV accelerating voltage. Calibration was done against French Geological Survey (BRGM) standard minerals and matrix correction factors (PAP) were used.
