GDNF, EGF and IGF-1 Levels in Acute and Remitted Schizophrenia Patients and Their Association with Symptom Severity: A Prospective Study

The research explores difference of GDNF, EGF and IGF-1 levels between acute/remitted schizophrenia patients and healthy controls and associates their levels with symptom severity. GDNF was found to be significantly lower in schizophrenia patients at 8th week (remitted) than in healthy controls, IGF-1 was found to be significantly lower in schizophrenia patients at 4th week and 8th week; EGF levels were found to be significantly lower at all measurement times (baseline(acute), 4th and 8th week(remitted)). At 8th week there is significantly negative correlation of all marker levels with PANSS negative and PANSS total scores. Calgary Depression Scale of Schizophrenia also was done to schizophrenia patients at all measurement times in order to exclude comorbid depression that might contributes different marker levels.

Steps to reproduce
In order to reproduce the given data, patients are selected according to DSM-5 diagnosis of schizophrenia and then for confirmation diagnosis SCID-4 interview can be done. Then patients are given PANSS and CDSS. If PANSS score is above 95 it is said that patient is eligible for the study. CDSS score should not indicate comorbid depression. Age, gender, smoking, BMI match controls can be reached via telephone, internet or social media. All participants should be free of organic diseases including metabolic, inflammatory, neurological. All participants should not use any anti inflammatory drug, corticosteroids, antibiotics within 2 or 4 weeks. All participants' intelligence quotient should above 70 and there shouldn't be any organic disabling condition such as hearing impairment or blindness. After selecting the eligible participants, demographic information of all participants are taken and then blood drawing procedure is done on the same day of the admission while in a fasting state between 8 to 10 am. Blood is withdrawn via 5-10 ml vacutainer tubes and then tubes are sent for centrifugation that is at 3500 rpm for 10 min. Then immediate ELISA analysis can be done or serum samples can be stored at -80 celcius degree for later analysis. At 4th week and 8th week, PANSS, CDSS are given to schizophrenia patients and blood sampling again is done.
