Description

This database covers 10 clay parameters, including liquid limit (LL), plasticity index (PI), liquidity index (LI), normalized vertical effective stress (σ'v/Pa; Pa = 101.3 kPa is one atmosphere pressure), normalized preconsolidation stress (σ'p/Pa), normalized undrained shear strength (su/σ'v), sensitivity (St), pore pressure ratio [Bq = (u2-u0)/(qt-σv); qt = cone tip resistance; σv = vertical total stress; u0 = hydrostatic pore pressure; u2 = CPTU pore pressure], normalized cone tip resistance [qt1 = (qt-σv)/σ'v], and normalized effective cone tip resistance [qtu = (qt-u2)/σ'v]. The 10 parameters for the CLAY/10/7490E database are divided into 3 categories: 1. Index properties, including LL, PI, and LI. 2. Stresses and strengths, including σ'v/Pa, σ'p/Pa, su/σ'v, and St. For su/σ'v, all su values in CLAY/10/7490E are converted to the mobilized su values, denoted by su(mob). 3. CPT parameters, including Bq, qt1, and qtn. This database contains 9,671 clay records compiled from 1,036 global sites – there are extra 2181 records added in the extension of CLAY/10/7490 (Ching and Phoon 2014). Each case in CLAY/10/7490E is stored as one row or a record in the Excel worksheet. There are 9,671 rows (records) in the worksheet. The 10 parameters are not completely observed for each record, i.e., there are empty entries. If the database were 100% complete, it would contain 96,710 entries. The CLAY/10/7490E database is 68% complete. The records in CLAY/10/7490E cover a wide range of LL (from 18 to 613), PI (from 1.7 to 493), LI (from -2.58 to 8.2), overconsolidation ratio (from 1 to 96), and St (from 1 to 1,481). However, there are limitations to the database. In terms of clay types, the CLAY/10/7490E database have limited organic clay records. In terms of geographical regions, there are limited records from Africa and Pacific Islands. Reference: Ching, J. and Phoon, K.K. (2014).
