Description

This dataset contains information related to the paper entitled "Short-Lived Halogen Sources and Chemistry in the Community Earth System Model v2 (CESM2-SLH)" submitted for publication in GMD (Geoscientific Model Development). In the work we summarize 15 years of research and developments of SLH in CESM and present a complete description of the implementation and capabilities achieved with the new released version CESM2-SLH, including the modified building scripts and updated routines, the specific namelist options for each compset, the input files and technical notes detailing the most important SLH updates that must be considered for the different model configurations and resolutions. The benchmark CESM code is available from https://www.cesm.ucar.edu/models/cesm2. The complete software code for CESM2-SLH (cesm2.2-asdbranch_slh) can be downloaded from the following Github link (https://github.com/RafaPedroFernandez/CESM/tree/cesm2.2-asdbranch_slh), which was created as a fork version of the CESM repository maintained by the NSF National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) at (https://github.com/ESCOMP/CESM/tree/cesm2.2-asdbranch). All code and data required to run the CESM2-SLH version is available within the individual subfolders included in Mendeley Datasets as described below.

Steps to reproduce

Code and Data is organized as follows: Folders $path/Build_CESM2-SLH/ and $path/SourceMods_CESM2-SLH/ contains, respectively, the compilation scripts and Fortran code updates related to SLH chemistry for CAM-Chem and WACCM (including their corresponding chem_mech.in); while folder $path/Namelists_CESM2-SLH/ includes the user-defined (e.g., user_nl_cam) configuration files for the main SLH compsets and resolutions. Main $path/Input_CESM2-SLH/ folder contains individual sub-folders with the required SLH emissions ($path/Input_CESM2-SLH/Emissions_CESM2-SLH/), absorption cross-sections ($path/Input_CESM2-SLH/XS_phot_CESM2-SLH/), lower-boundary conditions ($path/Input_CESM2-SLH/LBC_CESM2-SLH/) and initialization files ($path/Input_CESM2-SLH/IC_ncdata_CESM2-SLH) required to run the model. The 5-years mean model output for each individual simulation is located in folder $path/Output_CESM2-SLH/ for the periods 2000-2005 and 2015-2020.
