Attention on visual disgust: comparison of intentional and unintentional gaze on disgusting images - Associated Data
Description
Data associated with project "Attention on visual disgust: comparison of intentional and unintentional gaze on disgusting images" worked upon by Iveta Štolhoferová, Kateřina Freisingerová, Aleksandra Chomik, Daniel Frynta, Kristýna Sedláčková, & Eva Landová. Dataset was obtained during two eye-tracking experiments investigating seemingly contradictory effects disgust-eliciting stimuli: While they been shown to capture attention, even when task-irrelevant, they were also shown to be visually avoided when alternative stimuli are available. In the first experiment, disgust-eliciting images served as distractors, while in the second, the same images were designated as targets. Additionally, four categories of disgust-eliciting stimuli—disgusting animals, diseases, spoiled food, and pollution—were compared to assess the generality of the observed effects. Using a sample of over 100 participants, we replicated the distracting effect of disgust-eliciting stimuli (longer Reaction Time) across all categories except spoiled food. However, no differences in involuntary visual attention (number of fixations on the distractor before finding the target, lentgh of fixation on the distractor before finding the target) were observed between disgust-eliciting and neutral stimuli, suggesting that the distraction effect may stem from enhanced semantic processing in cortical areas rather than automatic visual capture. In the aimed viewing experiment, participants thoroughly scanned disgusting stimuli rather than avoiding them, with distinct scanning patterns emerging for each stimulus category, although quantitative differences in the number of fixations, number of saccades, number of visited areas of interest, and maximal fixation length were relatively small. The Excel file contains 5 sheets, two generated during eye-tracking experiment (ET) 1, two generated during ET 2, and one containing basic information about participants (anonymized).
