Description

This dataset focuses on active music participation and health and well-being among older adults in the context of healthy aging. A search strategy was developed based on the PICO framework, with older adults in diverse contexts, including musical activities and health-care settings, as the population of interest. Active music participation practices and health- and well-being-related outcomes were included in the search scope, while a comparison condition was not required. English-language literature published between January 1, 2000 and December 31, 2025 was systematically collected from four databases: Web of Science Core Collection, Scopus, PubMed, and APA PsycInfo. A total of 2,104 initial records were retrieved, including 629 from Web of Science, 669 from Scopus, 321 from PubMed, and 485 from APA PsycInfo. Literature screening followed the PRISMA process. In the first stage, duplicate records, retracted records, and records for which the original publication could not be further located were removed; 980 records were excluded, leaving 1,124. In the second stage, relevance screening based on titles, abstracts, and keywords excluded 528 records, leaving 596. In the third stage, full texts were obtained and publications were verified; 151 records were excluded, leaving 445 for full-text eligibility assessment. In the fourth stage, full texts were screened according to three criteria—active music participation, older adults, and health and well-being outcomes. A further 308 publications were excluded, resulting in a final research database of 137 publications. A total of 137 publications were ultimately included: 63 from Web of Science, 53 from Scopus, 8 from PubMed, and 13 from APA PsycInfo. Text data containing information such as titles, authors, and citations were exported from the respective databases and, where possible, standardized to the WoS tagged format to facilitate subsequent analysis. The document types comprised 119 Articles, 8 Reviews, 9 Book Chapters, and 1 Proceedings Paper. The 119 Articles and 8 Reviews together covered 73 journals. In total, the dataset includes 487 authors, 28 countries, 240 institutions, and 593 keywords. During data preparation, abbreviations, full names, and spelling variants of countries, institutions, author names, and keywords were standardized; VOSviewer thesaurus files were also used for unified replacement and name disambiguation to reduce potential bias. The dataset can be used for bibliometric analyses of annual publication output, journal distribution, country and institutional collaboration, author collaboration, keyword co-occurrence, and thematic evolution, and can also provide a data basis for further full-text content analysis and related research.

Files

Steps to reproduce

Import the bibliographic data into VOSviewer or other bibliometric software and apply the accompanying author, institution, country, and keyword thesaurus files for data standardization and disambiguation (Author_Thesaurus_VOSviewer.txt; Institution_Thesaurus_VOSviewer.txt; Country_Thesaurus_VOSviewer.txt; Keyword_Thesaurus_VOSviewer.txt). The RIS file contains the final included references (Final_137_References_Zotero.ris), while the PRISMA figure documents the literature screening process (Prisma Screening.png). The dataset can be used to reproduce the main bibliometric analyses reported in the associated study.
