dataset
Description
This dataset was used in the master's thesis titled “An Investigation of the Relationship Between Solitude, Preference for Solitude, and Loneliness, Meaning in Life, and Shyness.” Data were collected in the fall semester of the 2016–2017 academic year, following ethical approval from the Ethics Committee of Ankara University. The study examined university students’ preference for solitude and the types of solitude they experience. It also investigated the predictive roles of loneliness, meaning in life (presence and search), shyness, age, and sex. Participants were 470 university students (30.2% male, 69.8% female). Descriptive analyses showed that preference for solitude was moderate. Recreation, daydreaming, reminiscence, and intimacy were the most frequently experienced solitude types, while alienation and loneliness were the least common. Multiple regression analysis indicated that loneliness and shyness positively predicted preference for solitude, while the presence of meaning in life was a negative predictor. The predictors explained 12% of the variance in preference for solitude.
