A Large-Scale Survey Dataset on Artificial Intelligence (AI) Use, Cognitive Factors, and Critical Thinking among Vietnamese High School Students
Description
This dataset contains responses from a large-scale survey of 51,352 Vietnamese high school students (grades 10–12) examining the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in learning, associated cognitive and metacognitive factors, and critical thinking skills. Data were collected from students across 8 provinces/cities (Ha Noi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Can Tho, Phu Tho, Dien Bien, Ha Tinh, Lam Dong), covering urban, rural, and remote/mountainous areas, and both public and private schools. The survey instrument (included as a companion file, Questionnaire.docx) consists of three parts: (A) general/demographic information (grade, gender, location, school type, GPA, AI use history); (B) 12 blocks of 5-point Likert-scale items (59 items total) measuring AI usage patterns, learning strategies, metacognitive regulation, information evaluation, AI literacy/competency, teacher support, and school facilities; and (C) 8 scenario-based multiple-choice items assessing critical thinking skills in AI-assisted learning contexts (e.g., identifying argument structure, hidden assumptions, and verifying AI-generated claims). The dataset (Data.xlsx) includes 75 variables with no missing values, along with two companion sheets: a variable codebook ("Codebook") mapping each column to its source question, scale type, and value-label group, and a value-label dictionary ("Value Group") defining the coded categories for all nominal/ordinal variables. Data were collected anonymously; no personally identifiable information was recorded. This dataset is part of a Ministry-level research project (VNIES, Vietnam) on AI and critical thinking development among Vietnamese high school students.

Ethical approval & institutional coordination: The survey instrument and research design were approved by the Scientific Council of the Ministry of Education and Training (Vietnam) as part of Ministry-level project B2026.VKG.06, led by the Vietnam National Institute of Educational Sciences (VNIES). School recruitment: VNIES sent an official letter to the Departments of Education and Training in the 8 selected provinces/cities, which then forwarded the survey to all schools under their administration. Parental/guardian notification: Participating schools informed parents/guardians about the purpose, content, and voluntary nature of the survey before inviting students to take part. Sampling: The 8 provinces/cities (Ha Noi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Can Tho, Phu Tho, Dien Bien, Ha Tinh, Lam Dong) were purposively selected to represent diverse geographic regions and urban/rural/remote areas of Vietnam. Within each province, the survey was distributed to all schools via the Department of Education and Training, and students in grades 10–12 participated on a voluntary, self-selected basis. Mode of administration: The survey was administered online, taking approximately 20 minutes to complete. Students completed the questionnaire independently, without teacher supervision, to encourage candid responses. Consent procedure: Before starting, students confirmed via a checkbox that they had read and understood the study information, that their parent/guardian had been informed, and that they voluntarily agreed to participate. Participation was anonymous and voluntary; students could skip questions or withdraw at any time without penalty. Data processing: Responses were exported, anonymized (no name, class, or school identifiers were collected), coded numerically according to the value labels in the "Value Group" sheet, and compiled into the final dataset (Data.xlsx, 75 variables, N = 51,352, no missing values).
