Nutrition Information Design (NID) Dataset: User Experience with Paper-Based and Gamification-Based Nutrition Information
Description
[Dataset Description] This dataset was collected through a between-subject experiment investigating how different nutrition information designs influence learning outcomes, cognitive efficiency, and user engagement. A total of 60 adult participants were recruited and assigned to two independent conditions, with 30 participants in a paper-based nutrition label condition and 30 participants in a gamification-based web condition. Each participant experienced only one condition. Both conditions presented the same nutritional information but differed in interface and information-exploration design. The control condition used conventional nutrition labels from five processed food products, whereas the experimental condition used a gamification-based web interface. The web interface incorporated character-based interaction, sequential missions, immediate feedback, visualized rewards, and step-by-step information exploration to encourage active engagement with nutritional information. Before the experiment, participants completed a 10-item questionnaire assessing nutrition-label checking behavior, perceptions of existing nutrition information, and health-related attitudes. After experiencing the assigned condition, learning outcomes were assessed through five conceptual-understanding and five applied-understanding items. User experience measures included Ease of Use (EU), Cognitive Load (CL), Learning Immersion (LIm), and Interactivity (IN), reflecting cognitive efficiency and engagement with the information medium. The dataset also includes participant-level open-ended responses concerning the advantages, disadvantages, and suggested improvements of each nutrition information design. These responses provide qualitative insights into readability, information organization, interaction, visual presentation, and usability across the two conditions. Overall, the dataset supports comparative research on paper-based and gamification-based nutrition information designs, particularly in relation to information comprehension, cognitive efficiency, interaction, and user engagement.
