Description

This data set is of public transport vehicle locations and associated performance metrics covering Sydney (Australia) and surrounds. The data set is high volume, with a high sample frequency. The data set provided is based on a sample of continuously pinged queries to the network operator's open API over a 12 month period. At present, there are no publicly available long-term stores of this data describing historical events in detail. The following data is provided open source and free to use as long as the paper, its author(s) and Transport for NSW are attributed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 License. The shared data is designed to complement the paper 'The visual analytics of big, open public transport data – a framework and pipeline for monitoring system performance in Greater Sydney' and is sourced from the Transport for NSW Open Data Portal. This sample data is that it has been aggregated, processed and cleaned to a format suitable for visualisation platforms described in the paper. The volume of the data used in the study was over 800 million records. Due to this size, we can only provide sub-sets of this data through this portal. This is primarily intended for research & educative purposes related to deploying the methods in the paper. Further data requests for larger samples can be made to the author and/or Transport for NSW directly; or derived through your own methods through the API documentation found on the TfNSW Open Data portal (https://opendata.transport.nsw.gov.au/). We have packaged the data in several ways. Firstly, we supply one month of processed & cleaned vehicle location data for the following modes: A) Historical Ferry Location Data - March 2018 (Whole Month) Original Metadata: https://opendata.transport.nsw.gov.au/sites/default/files/TfNSW_Realtime_Ferry_Technical_Doc.pdf B) Historical Light Rail Location Data - March 2018 (Whole Month) Original Metadata: https://opendata.transport.nsw.gov.au/sites/default/files/TfNSW_Realtime_LightRail_Technical_Doc.pdf C) Historical City Rail Location Data - March 2018 (Whole Month) Original Metadata: https://opendata.transport.nsw.gov.au/sites/default/files/TfNSW_Realtime_Train_Technical_Doc.pdf D) Historical Regional Rail Location Data - March 2018 (Whole Month) Original Metadata: https://opendata.transport.nsw.gov.au/sites/default/files/NSWTrains_4trak_Technical.pdf Secondly, we supply examples of both bus vehicle location and rail vehicle location dated processed, cleaned and joined to delay data and aggregated to one minute intervals. E) Longitudinal sample of Route 370 - One Year (April 2018 to April 2019) Original Metadata: https://opendata.transport.nsw.gov.au/sites/default/files/TfNSW_Realtime_Bus_Technical_Doc.pdf F) All rail vehicles location & delay data - aggregated by delay (median) and rounded - One Year (April 2018 to April 2019) Original Metadata: https://opendata.transport.nsw.gov.au/sites/default/files/TfNSW_Realtime_Train_Technical_Doc.pdf
