Dataset on irrigation subsidies and river flows in Chile, 1970–2019
Description
This dataset compiles municipal-level information for Chile covering the period 1970–2019, resulting in 17,300 observations across 346 municipalities. It integrates data from three main sources: Hydrological and meteorological data from the Center for Climate Science and Resilience (CR2), including annual precipitation and river flow series derived from hydrometric and weather stations. Irrigation subsidies from the National Irrigation Commission (CNR), reporting 12,862 projects financed under Law N° 18,450 between 1987 and 2019. These subsidies are used as a proxy for the adoption of irrigation technology, given the absence of systematic records of fully private projects. Structural variables from the 2007 Agricultural and Forestry Census, including cultivated land, native forest, and forest plantations, which are relatively stable territorial characteristics. The dataset has been harmonized at the municipal level by aggregating hydrological and meteorological station data and georeferencing irrigation projects to municipalities. It includes both the raw annual series and treatment indicators used in the econometric analysis. Geographic coverage: 346 municipalities of Chile Temporal coverage: 1970–2019
