A compiled dataset of antihyperglycemic activities of inedible plant-based food waste extracts from peer-reviewed literature (2010–2025)
Description
This dataset compiles the reported antihyperglycemic (blood-glucose-lowering) activities of inedible plant-based food waste (IPBFW) extracts—including peels, seeds, husks, bran, pomace, and shells—extracted from primary peer-reviewed research articles published between 2010 and 2025. Source articles were identified through a systematic literature search conducted following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines on the PubMed and Scopus databases (search performed mid-October 2025). Ninety-four articles met the inclusion criteria, yielding 194 distinct sample entries that span in vitro cell-free enzyme-inhibition assays (α-amylase, α-glucosidase, and additional enzymes), cell-based in vitro assays, in vivo animal studies, and human clinical trials. For each entry the dataset records the plant origin and part, extraction type and solvent, study model, and the reported quantitative outcome (e.g., IC50 of carbohydrase inhibition, percentage reduction in fasting or other glucose levels), together with population and intervention details where applicable. Entries that yielded no significant effect or non-quantifiable results are retained in separate sheets for transparency. Original reported values are preserved, with footnote markers indicating values derived from graphical data or otherwise context-dependent. The dataset enables cross-study comparison and benchmarking of extract potency, meta-analysis, data-driven and machine-learning screening of candidate natural antihyperglycemic agents, and food-waste valorization research.

Steps to reproduce
1. A systematic literature search was conducted following PRISMA 2020 (Page et al., 2021) on PubMed and Scopus; search performed mid-October 2025. 2. Search strings combined glycaemia-related terms with food-waste terms: - PubMed: (hyperglycem* OR antidiabetic OR hypoglycem* OR antihyperglycem*) AND ("food waste" OR "by-product*") - Scopus: KEY(hyperglycem* OR antidiabetic OR hypoglycem*) AND ("food waste" OR "by-product*") 3. Inclusion: English-language primary research articles (2010–2025) on inedible plant-based food waste reporting antihyperglycemic parameters (IC50 of α-amylase, α-glucosidase, or β-galactosidase inhibition; statistically significant glucose-level reduction; increased insulin secretion/sensitivity; increased glucose uptake; or data permitting their calculation). 4. Exclusion: reviews, in-silico-only studies, animal-based wastes, normally consumed plant parts, and further-processed/purified extracts. 5. Of 2,816 records identified, 94 articles met the inclusion criteria (PRISMA flow: 2,816 identified → 2,756 English → 2,561 within 2010–2025 → 1,626 preliminary screen → 154 full-text → 94 included). 6. Quantitative outcomes were extracted manually and curated into the eight sheets described in the README. Where results were reported only graphically, values were estimated and flagged.
