Directional moisture transfer induced by standardized homogenization in the gravimetric characterization of municipal solid waste
Description
Raw data supporting the article "Directional moisture transfer induced by standardized homogenization in the gravimetric characterization of municipal solid waste". Paired experimental design in which the waste collected on each day was divided and processed simultaneously by three gravimetric characterization protocols, across four campaigns conducted at a full-time public educational institution in Eunapolis, Bahia, Brazil. The dataset comprises gravimetric composition by category (10 categories, 120 records) and moisture content by fraction (4 fractions, 48 records), covering 881.32 kg of waste. It supports the analysis of moisture redistribution among waste fractions induced by standardized mechanical homogenization, referred to in the article as the sponge effect.

Steps to reproduce
At each of the four campaigns, the full mass of municipal solid waste generated at CIEB was collected and split into three parallel batches on the same day. Batch 1 (General_Reference) was manually sorted into the ten categories without homogenization. Batch 2 (ABNT) was mechanically turned and quartered per ABNT NBR 10007:2004 to approximately one quarter of the mass, then sorted. Batch 3 (ASTM) was mechanically tumbled per ASTM D5231-92 (adapted, no mass reduction), then sorted. Category masses were recorded on a digital platform balance (0.01 kg resolution). For moisture content, subsamples of the random aggregate, organics, plastics and paper/cardboard fractions were weighed on a precision balance (0.001 kg resolution), oven-dried at 110 degrees Celsius to constant mass, verified by successive weighings, and reweighed to record the final mass; moisture was calculated as the mass loss relative to the initial mass.
