Description

This study aims to examine the influence of environmental knowledge and responsible behavior on environmental commitment among Generation Z in Indonesia, while investigating the moderating role of social media engagement in these relationships. A quantitative approach was employed using primary data collected through an online questionnaire distributed via Google Forms. The study involved 273 Generation Z respondents residing in Indonesia. Data were analyzed using Multiple Regression Analysis. The findings indicate that environmental knowledge and responsible behavior have positive and significant effects on environmental commitment. These results suggest that individuals with greater environmental understanding and stronger responsible behavioral practices are more likely to demonstrate a higher level of commitment toward environmental sustainability. However, social media engagement does not significantly moderate the relationships between environmental knowledge and environmental commitment, nor between responsible behavior and environmental commitment. This finding implies that social media interaction alone may not be sufficient to strengthen the translation of environmental knowledge and responsible behavior into long-term environmental commitment. The study contributes to the sustainability literature by providing empirical evidence on the drivers of environmental commitment among Generation Z in an emerging economy context. Practically, the findings highlight the importance of strengthening environmental education and fostering responsible behavior to support sustainability initiatives. Furthermore, the study aligns with SDG 12 on Responsible Consumption and Production and SDG 13 on Climate Action by promoting environmentally responsible attitudes and commitments among younger generations.
