This dataset was compiled following PRISMA 2020 guidelines for a systematic review. Searches were conducted in Scopus, Web of Science, and African Journals Online in July 2026, for studies published between January 2010 and July 2026, supplemented by citation snowballing. This identified 182 records; after removing 43 duplicates, 139 unique records were screened by title and abstract, yielding 20 studies for inclusion. For each included study, data were extracted across 19 fields covering bibliographic details, study design, sample, population, climate shock type, financial coping/adaptation strategies named, level of response (individual/collective/institutional), effectiveness evidence, barriers to formal financial access, and author-reported limitations (Supplementary Table S1). Each study was then appraised against the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT 2018), scored criterion-by-criterion (Yes/No/Can't tell) according to its research design — qualitative, quantitative descriptive, or mixed methods (Supplementary Table S2). Full eligibility criteria, the complete search strategy, and the coding framework are described in the accompanying manuscript.
