Description

The data set contains ambient PM10 concentrations and meteorological variables (air temperature and pressure, wind speed and direction) for the period 2014-2023) measured in a location in a mining district within the Atacama Desert. The source of the data is a public access ambient air quality station belonging to Chile's National Air Quality Information System (SINCA in Spanish). The specific URL of the data is: https://sinca.mma.gob.cl/index.php/estacion/index/id/255. The only piece of information that does not belong to this site is atmospheric pressure, which was taken from another site in the same region: https://sinca.mma.gob.cl/index.php/estacion/index/id/124 The hypothesis is that a fuzzy clustering analysis of the above data set would produce the spatiotemporal patterns that underly ambient PM10 concentrtrations at that site (Sierra Gorda town). In particular, we expect that the contributions to ambient PM10 coming from the nearby mining activities will be identified, as long as other anthropogenic sources and the natural, aeolian contribution as well. The data set includes the processing of data previous to the application of the fuzzy clustering algorithm. The macros included are written in R language. The sequential application of the four macros listed below provides figures of results and the interpretation for each of them as a contribution from one of the emission sources relevant in this mining district.

Steps to reproduce

The data were pre-processed as follows: a) Ambient PM10 was log transformed to obtain a probability distribution more close to a normal one. b) The wind speed and direction were transformed to the (u,v) horizontal components of wind vector. c) All variables are standardized before actual computations are carried out d) The fclust R package was used to carry out the fuzzy clustering (routine fkmne)
