Wi-Fi Usage Data in City of Toronto Community Centres

These datasets are for a research paper titled "Providing an Access Point: A socio-spatial analysis of free public Wi-Fi use in City of Toronto community centres." This paper presents results of research into socio-spatial determinants of the public's use of free municipal Wi-Fi in City of Toronto community centres. A mixed-methods approach consisting of in-person surveys, a facility design checklist, and face-to-face discussions with community centre visitors was undertaken at 15 City of Toronto community centres between June and July 2025. The results highlight no statistical correlation between visitor use of free public Wi-Fi and proximity or mode of travel to community centres, but strong correlations between the amount of time spent on Wi-Fi and the types of online tasks users engage in. These results help to resolve gaps in scholarship concerning determinants of Wi-Fi use in municipal facilities inclusive of physical space characteristics, as well as users' perceptions towards the broader value of free public Wi-Fi.
