Description

Data Description 1. Research Hypothesis and Objectives The accompanying research article reports that during intermittent hold-time fatigue of AZ31B magnesium alloy, room-temperature creep during hold periods affects subsequent cyclic deformation behavior and leads to a non-monotonic frequency dependence of fatigue life, with a peak at 2 Hz. This data article provides the raw mechanical data underlying all figures in that paper, enabling independent verification, reanalysis, and reuse. 2. Data Content Overview This dataset contains the raw test data corresponding to all figures in the main paper that are based on mechanical experiments. All tests were performed on an extruded AZ31B magnesium alloy at room temperature under three loading modes: Intermittent hold-time fatigue tests: triangular waveform (R = 0) at a peak stress of 180 MPa, with a 60 s constant-stress hold at 180 MPa after every 60 cycles, repeated until failure. Frequencies: 0.4, 1, 2, 3, and 4 Hz. Pure fatigue tests (control): continuous triangular waveform (R = 0, peak stress 180 MPa, frequency 0.4 Hz). Pure creep tests (control): constant stress of 180 MPa held for 120 hours. The data files are organized according to the figure numbering of the main paper, and the file names correspond one-to-one with the figure numbers. 3. Data Processing and Interpretation The raw data were processed using MATLAB scripts. The following quantities were derived from the raw time-series data: Hysteresis loop: extracted from the loading and unloading segments of each cycle. Ratcheting strain: ε_r = (ε_max − ε_min)/2 per cycle. Creep strain during hold: increment of strain from the start to the end of each 60 s hold period. Accumulated plastic strain: sum of ratcheting strain and creep strain over the entire test. Hysteresis loop area: calculated by numerical integration (trapezoidal method) of the loading and unloading curves. All processed values used for plotting are also provided as .csv files, so that users can reproduce every figure without additional computation. Error bars in the figures represent standard deviation (SD) from replicate tests. 4. How to Use This Dataset This dataset enables users to: Reproduce all mechanical figures in the main paper; Perform independent analysis of the frequency-dependent ratcheting and creep behavior; Extract raw stress-strain data for calibration or validation of cyclic plasticity models, creep models, or fatigue life models for AZ31B magnesium alloy; Compare the present data with existing data on Mg alloys under similar loading conditions. 5. Data Availability The dataset is deposited in the Mendeley Data repository (DOI: to be assigned). The folder structure mirrors the figure numbering of the main paper. A file is included, explaining file naming conventions, column headers, units, and sample information. Users are requested to cite both this data article and the accompanying research article when using the data.
