Steps to reproduce
Place 3 small crates in a stable. Place one crate at the end nearest the door and two at each of the opposite corners. The stable we used provided a 4m gap between the focal crate (near the door) and the two at the opposite ends. When assigning lambs to be tested ensure they are of good health and have a good ability to stand and suckle. Place the "focal" lambs sibling in one of the far crates and place a non related lamb of the same age in the other. Place the focal lamb in the crate nearest the door and allow habituation for 30 minutes. Release the gate of the crate containing the focal lamb and start a timer. Note which crate the lamb goes towards first (sibling or alien age-mate). Repeat this test three times with each focal lamb. Be sure to note which side the sibling is on and try to change this throughout the experiment to ensure there is no preference to side taking place.
