Data for assessing integral time scale estimation from PIV measurements
Description
This dataset contains processed 2D cylinder-wake PIV velocity fields and DNS-based artificial volumetric PIV velocity fields used to support the manuscript titled “The optimal way to determine the Integral Time Scale with the particle image velocimetry.” Raw PIV image files and artificial volumetric particle images are not included due to their large file size. The DNS source data are publicly available from the Johns Hopkins Turbulence Database. Metadata files are included to describe the dataset structure, variable names, coordinate conventions, and unit conversions.

Steps to reproduce
1. Download and unzip the dataset while preserving the folder structure. 2. For the cylinder-wake 2D PIV data, open `01_cylinder_wake_2D_PIV/cylinder_wake_velocity_case_D2Q1.mat` in MATLAB. The file contains PIVlab-exported variables. In the manuscript coordinate convention, the PIVlab variable `y` corresponds to the vertical coordinate `z`, and the PIVlab velocity component `v` corresponds to the vertical velocity component `w`. Detailed variable descriptions are provided in `metadata_cylinder_wake_2D_PIV.txt`. 3. For the DNS-based artificial PIV data, open the folders `HIT_3D_PIV_intw32`, `HIT_3D_PIV_intw64`, and `HIT_3D_PIV_intw128` under `02_DNS_based_artificial_PIV`. Each folder contains `pos.mat`, which stores the PIV vector positions, and time-step files such as `t=000003.mat`, which store the velocity field at each time step. 4. In the DNS-based artificial PIV files, use the velocity-component mapping described in `metadata_DNS_based_artificial_PIV.txt`: `u_manuscript = vel.u`, `v_manuscript = vel.w`, and `w_manuscript = vel.v`. Position variables are given in voxel units, and velocity variables are given in voxel/frame. Unit conversion factors are provided in the metadata file. 5. The velocity fields can be used to compute the power spectral densities and integral time scales following the spectral procedures described in the related manuscript.
