Description

Data used to examine the effect of the reduction of the speed limit for motor vehicles on bicycle commuting in France. Raw data for Paris come from https://opendata.paris.fr, for Lyon from https://data.eco-counter.com, for Nantes from https://www.data.gouv.fr, for Montpellier from https://data.montpellier3m.fr and for Rennes from https://data.rennesmetropole.fr. The total cycling infrastructure is the sum of cycle paths, cycle lanes, special COVID-19 infrastructure, and other infrastructure. For Nantes and Montpellier, the data concerning dedicated COVID-19 infrastructure were added from https://ecf.com/dashboard. Data for the area of the cities comes from https://www.insee.fr. For the outcome of interest and precipitation level, the few missing values were imputed using principal components analysis. The city of Paris implemented the speed limit decrease on 31 August 2021, Nantes on 31 August 2020, Montpellier on 1 August 2021 and Rennes on 31 August 2020.
