Maize-Weed Image Dataset
Description
The dataset contains images of maize plants and weed species. The dataset contains 36874 images in total and stored in three folders namely Dry Season, Wet Season and Annotated. The Dry Season contains 18187 images captured during dry season farm survey,the Wet Season contains 18187 images captured during wet season farm survey and the Annotated contains 500 annotated images selected from the Dry Season survey saved in JSON,XML and txt format. The annotated was achieved using the Labelmg suite. The raw wet and dry seasons images have been captured using a high-resolution digital camera during the weed survey, while the annotation of the annotated image was done using the Labelmg suite. A total of 18 farm locations were visited in North Central part of Nigeria for the data acquisition as part of an ongoing research effort on maize -weeds identification in farmlands.

Steps to reproduce
The dataset contains images of maize crops and their accompanying weeds. These images were taken on field trips to 18 different maize farmlands within four (4) Local Government Areas of Niger State, Nigeria, West Africa. The data were collected from irrigated maize fields under using traditional maize cultivation practices. A 24.3 MP digital picture camera (Sony A6000) was utilized to capture raw images of the maize and weeds in situ on several farmlands throughout the research region. The photos and video frames were captured at a distance of one foot from the crop while keeping the camera at a constant height. The image set was acquired in a ‘handheld’ manner. This implies that the photographer manually held the camera and acquired the images by moving through the farmland. This manual process of data acquisition had to be done since the terrain of the farmland and the spacing of the ridges did not allow for the use of a vehicle in which the camera could be mounted. The images were also checked individually to ensure all images were in focus and the blurry images were removed from the dataset.
