Description

This study examines the production of social space among street vendors (PKL) in Culinary Tourism Centers (SWK) in Surabaya using Henri Lefebvre’s framework, which includes spatial practices, representations of space, and representational spaces. A qualitative case study approach was employed, using in-depth interviews, field observations, and secondary data. The findings show that space production in SWK is not solely controlled by government policies but results from interactions between formal regulations, informal vendor practices, and socio-cultural values. Vendors actively shape space through adaptive strategies such as modifying layouts, adding facilities, and negotiating space informally. Government representations of SWK as orderly culinary tourism areas often differ from on-site realities. Meanwhile, representational spaces highlight social relations built on solidarity and cooperation among vendors. SWK emerges as a hybrid space where formal and informal dynamics coexist, creating ongoing negotiation and inequality in economic benefit distribution. Overall, social space production in SWK is dynamic and continuously evolving.
