Description

The dataset consists of electric and magnetic field recordings of 12 lightning flashes analyzed in the manuscript "Lightning Initiation Observed from Space: A Multi-Instrument Study Using LIS and Ground-Based Electromagnetic Data".

Files

Steps to reproduce

The following files and folder contain the data necessary to reproduce the analysis: Files: - "Flashes_SLAVIA.txt": Lists all 12 flashes. For each flash, the file lists the name of the SLAVIA sensor, the SLAVIA file name, the date and the data acquisition time start (time of the first sample) shifted to the location of the LIS flash by signal travel duration (SLAVIA start time), and the time of the largest PB pulse peak (in ms from the SLAVIA start time). - "EUCLID.txt" and "METEORAGE.txt": Contains all EUCLID (METEORAGE) data required for the analysis. Includes the date and time, latitude and longitude, peak current and type of the detected discharge as reported by EUCLID (METEORAGE) - CG for cloud-to-ground and IC for intra/inter-cloud. Folders: - "SLAVIA.zip": A compressed folder containing subdirectories organized by SLAVIA sensor ("ERSA", "ML & LFR"). Each subfolder contains one folder per analyzed flash, named according to the SLAVIA file name as listed in "Flashes_SLAVIA.txt." - In the "ERSA" folder, each flash folder contains: "xxE1_mag.txt": Magnetic field waveform data in nT, with corresponding time in ms from the SLAVIA start time in "xxE1_time.txt" - In the "ML & LFR" folder, each flash folder contains: "xx_ms1.txt" and "xx_ms2.txt" - Magnetic field data from two orthogonal SLAVIA antennas. Each file includes the time in ms from the SLAVIA start time (1st column), corresponding SLAVIA magnetic field values in nT (2nd column) - "WWLLN.zip": A compressed folder containing WWLLN .loc data files. Each file contains records without a header with data in columns as specified below: 1. Record date 2. Record time -- gives UTC time combined with the date 3. Record latitude 4. Record longitude 5. Residual error 6. Number of statistic points 7. Measured energy [J] 8. Energy error [J] 9. Number of statistic points for energy calculation - "ENTLN_csv.zip": A compressed folder with ENTLN data files in .csv format (used before the year 2023). The data included in this work were extracted from the following columns: * `Lightning_Time_String` -- record timestamp [UTC] * `Latitude` -- record latitude * `Longitude` -- record longitude * `Height` -- record altitude [m] * `Amplitude` -- detected current [A] - "ENTLN_json.zip": A compressed folder with ENTLN data file in .json format (used from 2023). The JSON format of ENTLN detection network consists of lines each defined as a separate JSON encoded record. Although records contain extra information, the data extracted for this study are specified by following fields: * `timeStamp` -- record timestamp * `startTimeStamp` -- event start timestamp * `endTimeStamp` -- event end timestamp * `latitude` -- record latitude * `longitude` -- record longitude * `height` -- record altitude [m] * `amplitude` -- record current [A]
