Annotated G-function Plots from a Statistical Review of 225 Diagnostic Fracture Injection Tests from the Montney Shale
Description
The Alberta Energy Regulator collects DFIT data from operators and makes it publicly available. We downloaded all available DFITs from the Montney shale and reviewed the plots to assess whether or not they show a ‘compliance’ closure response, as evaluated from the G-function plot. The results provided in this document will be presented in a paper at the February 2026 SPE Hydraulic Fracturing Technology Conference.

Diagnostic Fracture Injection Tests (DFITs) are used to estimates the state of stress in the subsurface. The Alberta Energy Regulator collects DFIT data from operators and makes it publicly available. We downloaded all available AER DFITs from the Montney shale and reviewed the plots to assess whether or not they show a ‘compliance method’ closure response, as evaluated from the G-function plot. We compared stress estimates from two different techniques - the compliance method and the tangent method. This document shows annotated interpretations of all the plots. A summary of the results in this document will be presented in a paper at the February 2026 SPE Hydraulic Fracturing Technology Conference. Details of the interpretation procedures are provided in the slides.
