Paternal breastfeeding self-efficacy measured by the BSES-SF and its association with exclusive breastfeeding: a scoping review
Description
Description This dataset supports a scoping review investigating paternal breastfeeding self-efficacy, measured using the Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale – Short Form among Fathers (BSES-SF), and its association with exclusive breastfeeding outcomes. The review was conducted following the methodological framework of the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) and reported according to the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. The dataset includes all materials used during the review process, ensuring transparency, reproducibility, and methodological rigor. The search strategy was structured based on the PCC framework (Population, Concept, Context) and applied across multiple bibliographic databases, including PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, ERIC, LILACS, SciELO, BDENF, and IBECS. Grey literature sources were also searched, including Google Scholar, ProQuest Dissertations & Theses, OpenGrey, OATD, NDLTD, CAPES Theses Database, and institutional repositories. The dataset contains: Complete search strategies for all databases Records identified and screened (PRISMA flow data) Deduplicated reference list Screening decisions (title/abstract and full-text levels) Reasons for exclusion at full-text stage Data extraction spreadsheet (structured according to PCC framework) Variables including: author, year, country, study design, population, sample size, context, BSES-SF use, psychometric properties, and breastfeeding outcomes Categorization of studies (psychometric validation vs association studies) Methodological quality assessment using Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) critical appraisal tools Summary tables used in the manuscript The final dataset includes 11 studies published between 2018 and 2025, conducted across eight countries (Canada, Malawi, Turkey, Indonesia, Brazil, Iran, Thailand, and China), representing diverse socioeconomic contexts. This dataset enables replication of the review process, secondary analyses, and further research on paternal involvement in breastfeeding and its impact on maternal and child health outcomes. Keywords Breastfeeding; Paternal self-efficacy; BSES-SF; Exclusive breastfeeding; Scoping review; PRISMA-ScR; Joanna Briggs Institute Methodology Scoping review conducted according to Joanna Briggs Institute methodology and reported following PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Protocol registered in Open Science Framework (DOI: 10.17605/OSF.IO/3Q2B4). Usage Notes This dataset may be used for methodological replication, evidence synthesis, meta-research, or development of interventions targeting paternal involvement in breastfeeding support.

Steps to reproduce
Steps to Reproduce Protocol access Retrieve the full protocol registered in the Open Science Framework (DOI: 10.17605/OSF.IO/3Q2B4). Define eligibility criteria Apply the PCC framework: Population: fathers/partners of infants Concept: paternal breastfeeding self-efficacy measured by BSES-SF Context: any healthcare or community setting Replicate search strategy Run the search strategies provided in the dataset across the following databases: PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, ERIC, LILACS, SciELO, BDENF, and IBECS. Include grey literature sources (Google Scholar, ProQuest, OpenGrey, OATD, NDLTD, CAPES). Apply search limits Include studies from January 2018 to January 2026. No language restrictions. Manage references Export all records to a reference manager and remove duplicates. Screen studies Conduct title and abstract screening independently by two reviewers using the eligibility criteria. Proceed with full-text screening for potentially eligible studies. Document exclusions Record reasons for exclusion at the full-text stage using predefined categories. Data extraction Use the standardized extraction form provided in the dataset. Extract: author, year, country, design, population, BSES-SF use, psychometric properties, and breastfeeding outcomes. Categorize studies Classify studies into: (1) psychometric validation/adaptation (2) association with exclusive breastfeeding outcomes Methodological appraisal Apply Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) critical appraisal tools according to study design. Synthesize results Perform descriptive and narrative synthesis without meta-analysis, following PRISMA-ScR guidance. Reporting Reproduce the PRISMA flow diagram and summary tables using the dataset provided.
