Description

Spatial thermal heterogeneity in lithium-ion cells is known to influence hotspot formation, cell degradation, and the effectiveness of battery thermal and safety management. Cell design strongly affects these temperature distributions, particularly the number and locations of electrode tabs. Conventional thermocouple measurements at discrete locations provide limited spatial information, restricting hotspot identification and the validation of three-dimensional thermal models. This article presents time-resolved dense surface-temperature measurements for three cylindrical lithium-ion cell designs: the LG M50 21700 cell, incorporating 1 positive and 1 negative tab; the Molicel P45b 21700 cell, incorporating 2 positive and 3 negative tabs; and the first-generation Tesla 4680 cell, featuring a tabless current-collection design. The data were acquired during charge and discharge cycling at an ambient temperature of 25 degC using high-resolution distributed fibre-optic sensing. The LG M50 and Molicel P45b cells were cycled at multiple C-rates, whereas the Tesla 4680 cells were cycled at 20A. The complete dataset enables the reconstruction of spatial temperature maps, temperature contour lines, identification and tracking of hotspots, quantification of thermal heterogeneity under different operating conditions, comparison of different cell and tab designs, and validation of three-dimensional thermal models, further supporting the development of improved thermal-management strategies and cell current-collection designs. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first publicly available comparative dataset of spatially resolved dense surface-temperature measurements covering conventional single-tab, multi-tab, and tabless cylindrical lithium-ion cell designs.
