EEG Dataset Capturing Brain Responses of Nutrition in children aged 8–11 years
Description
This dataset comprises 50 quantitative Electroencephalogram (qEEG) reports derived from pediatric subjects aged 8 to 10 years. The recordings provide a comprehensive neurophysiological profile, including spectral power analysis and topographical brain mapping, organized into four primary folders based on the elementary school (SD) location of the subjects. Data Structure and Institutional Categorization The dataset is categorized into folders corresponding to the following educational institutions: 1. SD Muhammadiyah Karangkajen: Includes 10 subjects (IDs 21, 22, 23, 24, 27, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33). Data in this group typically exhibit Delta and Theta wave dominance, with a recorded peak power of 31.0 μV² at location P3-A1 for subject ID 23. 2. SD Muhammadiyah Argosari: Includes 15 subjects (IDs 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 44, 45, 46, 47, 48, 49, 50). This cohort contains extreme Delta power values, notably in ID 45 (1900.4 μV²) and ID 46 (1900.2 μV²). 3. SD Muhammadiyah Kaputran: Includes 15 subjects (IDs 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 51, 53, 54, 55, 56, 57, and 21). Significant Alpha 2 activity was identified in this group, with subjects ID 56 and ID 54 reaching peak powers of 1942.7 μV². 4. SD Menteng: Contains 17 subjects not included in the previous categories (IDs 20, 25, 61, 62, 63, 64, 65, 66, 67, 68, 69, 70, 71, 72, 73, 74, 75). Dominant activity is primarily in the Delta (0.8–3.8 Hz) band, with exceptional peak power values recorded for subject ID 72 (3406.1 μV²) and subject ID 75 (1031.6 μV²). Technical Recording Specifications All qEEG data were recorded using standardized clinical parameters to ensure technical consistency: - Recording Speed: 30 mm/s. - Sensitivity: 5.0 mm / 50 µV. - Montage: Monopolar configuration with 16 primary channels (Fp1, Fp2, F3, F4, C3, C4, P3, P4, O1, O2, F7, F8, T3, T4, T5, T6) referenced to the auricles (A1, A2). - Physiological Context: Simultaneous 2-channel Electrocardiogram (ECG1, ECG2) recordings. Clinical Frequency Band Analysis Spectral power is analyzed across six defined clinical frequency ranges: - Delta: 0.8–3.8 Hz. - Theta: 4.0–7.8 Hz. - Alpha 1 & 2: 8.0–12.8 Hz. - Beta 1 & 2: 13.0–30.0 Hz. Visualization Formats Each subject report includes multiple analytical visualizations: - Brain Electrical Activity Mapping (BEAM): Includes Numerical BEAM (µV² values), Side View projections, and Three-Dimensional Rotary BEAM. - Spectral Graphs: Power Spectrum Graphs (5Hz scale), Compressed Spectrum Graphs (temporal), and Spectrum Rectangle Graphs (power distribution). This dataset is intended for advanced research in neurophysiology, pediatric neuroscience, and biomedical signal processing.

Steps to reproduce
1. Identify elementary schools that either participate in the Free Nutritious Meal Program (MBG) or have not yet implemented the program. Four schools were selected: one MBG school (SD Karangkajen) and three non-MBG schools (SD Argosari and SD Kaputran). 2. Recruit children aged 7–12 years who meet the inclusion criteria. Participants in the MBG group must have regularly received meals through the MBG program, while participants in the non-MBG group must not have received the program. Obtain written informed consent from parents or legal guardians before participation. 3. Screen participants according to the exclusion criteria, including a history of neurological disorders (e.g., epilepsy, head injury, brain tumor), current use of medications affecting the central nervous system, or diagnosed developmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder or ADHD. 4. Record demographic information, including age, sex, school affiliation, and MBG participation status. A total of 57 children were included in the dataset, consisting of 27 children in the MBG group and 30 children in the non-MBG group. 5. Prepare participants for EEG acquisition in a quiet room. Instruct participants to sit comfortably and remain relaxed with their eyes closed during recording. 6. Place 19 active EEG electrodes according to the International 10–20 System at Fp1, Fp2, F3, F4, C3, C4, P3, P4, O1, O2, F7, F8, T3, T4, T5, T6, Fz, Cz, and Pz. Use A1 and A2 as reference electrodes. 7. Verify that electrode impedance values are below 5 kΩ before data collection begins. 8. Acquire EEG signals under the Eyes Closed (EC) resting-state condition using the following parameters: recording speed 30 mm/s, amplification 5.0 mm/50 μV, epoch length 2 seconds, and 20 epochs per participant. 9. Perform artifact inspection and remove contaminated epochs through a combination of automatic and manual procedures. Retain only artifact-free epochs for subsequent analysis. 10. Organize the dataset by assigning participant identifiers, demographic variables, group labels (MBG or non-MBG), and EEG recordings. Store the processed EEG data and accompanying metadata in separate files to facilitate reproducibility and secondary analyses.
