Description

This dataset contains the life cycle inventory (LCI) and life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) data underlying the environmental evaluation of the RE-GreenVOCs valorisation pathway in Cyprus, in which woody pruning waste is converted into biochar by slow pyrolysis, used as an adsorbent to capture VOCs and odorous compounds from livestock manure, and finally applied to agricultural soil as an amendment in barley cultivation. Six scenarios are covered as three paired comparisons, each with its own functional unit: biochar production via pyrolysis versus aerobic composting of the same woody waste; biochar-assisted manure treatment for VOC removal versus conventional uncontrolled manure management; and field application of the spent biochar/manure mixture versus conventional barley cultivation with synthetic fertiliser and pesticide inputs. Foreground data were collected from pilot activities using a structured data collection tool recording material inputs, energy inputs, transport and material outputs for every unit process. Background data were taken from established life cycle databases and the models were built in Sphera LCA for Experts. Impacts were characterised with the CML baseline midpoint method, with photochemical oxidation treated as the signature category given the VOC focus of the technology. Results are provided both as characterised values with a per-process breakdown and as pairwise contributions normalised within each impact category. The data support benchmarking of biochar-based systems, comparison of pyrolysis and composting routes, and reuse as a transparent inventory basis for further scenario or sensitivity modelling.
