Human behavior has long been explained through models that divide the mind into internal parts or forces. Classical psychoanalytic theory, for example, describes behavior as the result of competing psychological structures. While historically important, such models often treat the mind as a set of fixed internal components rather than a continuously adapting system. Modern cognitive science increasingly suggests a different view: human cognition is not built from separate “parts,” but from layered processes that transform sensory experience into meaning and action. This paper proposes a simplified but unified framework called the SEIR model—Sensory Input, Experience Encoding, Interpretation, and Response. It describes cognition as a continuous flow rather than a collection of internal agents. In this view, behavior is not caused by isolated psychological forces, but emerges from how the brain processes incoming information, stores experience, interprets meaning, and produces emotional or behavioral responses. The first stage of this system is sensory input. Humans constantly receive information from the environment through sight, sound, touch, smell, and taste. However, perception is not a perfect recording of reality. The brain filters incoming data, prioritizing what is relevant for attention and survival. This means that from the very beginning, reality is already being shaped by what the mind considers important. We do not experience the full world—we experience a selected version of it. Once information is perceived, it moves into what can be described as experience encoding. At this stage, sensory events are not stored neutrally. Instead, they are transformed into memory based on emotional intensity, repetition, and survival relevance. Experiences that are threatening, rewarding, or frequently repeated become more deeply encoded and more likely to influence future cognition. Over time, this creates a system where past experience continuously shapes how new information is understood. In simple terms, the brain uses what has happened before to interpret what is happening now. The third stage is interpretation. This is where the brain assigns meaning to incoming information using stored experience. Interpretation involves pattern recognition, causal reasoning, and prediction. It is the stage where the mind decides what something “means,” whether it is dangerous or safe, and whether it should be ignored or acted upon. Importantly, interpretation is not objective. It is filtered through memory, bias, and prior experience. This is why the same event can produce completely different understandings in different individuals or groups. Finally, interpretation leads to response. This includes emotional reactions, decisions, and observable actions. Fear, anger, empathy, avoidance, or engagement all emerge from how an event has been interpreted through the earlier layers....
