Dataset for “Exploring the Factors that Influence the Intention to Purchase Secondhand Clothes: An Extended Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) Approach”
Description
This dataset accompanies the study “Exploring the Factors that Influence the Intention to Purchase Secondhand Clothes,” which investigates the determinants of consumers’ intention to purchase secondhand clothing (SHC) within an extended Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) framework. The study examines the influence of environmental motivation, economic motivation, fashion motivation, electronic word-of-mouth (e-WOM), and influencer communication on attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and purchase intention toward secondhand clothing. The dataset was collected through an online survey administered in 2025 to higher education students from multiple European countries. Responses were measured using multi-item Likert scales adapted from established literature on sustainable consumption, secondhand clothing, social influence, and consumer behavior. The Excel file contains two worksheets: 1. Sustainable Fashion: Original survey responses with personally identifiable and potentially sensitive information removed or anonymized in accordance with GDPR principles. Direct identifiers were not collected, while indirect identifiers and open-text fields were masked or excluded to reduce re-identification risk. 2. dat_sem: Cleaned dataset used in the Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) analysis reported in the associated article. This sheet contains 40 indicator variables corresponding to the latent constructs included in the research model: o EWSM1–EWSM4 (Electronic Word-of-Mouth) o EWI1–EWI4 (Influencer Communication) o FM1–FM5 (Fashion Motivation) o ECM1–ECM4 (Economic Motivation) o ENM1–ENM6 (Environmental Motivation) o ATT1–ATT5 (Attitude Toward Secondhand Clothing) o SN1–SN4 (Subjective Norm) o PBC1–PBC5 (Perceived Behavioral Control) o INT1–INT3 (Purchase Intention) The cleaned dataset was generated by converting survey responses to numerical Likert-scale values, applying quality-control procedures, and performing listwise deletion of incomplete observations for the SEM indicators. The dataset enables full replication of the measurement and structural model analyses presented in the associated publication.

Steps to reproduce
This study employed a survey-only, cross-sectional research design. The unit of analysis was the individual consumer, operationalized as a higher-education student respondent. The data were collected from students at higher education institutions in Europe in 2025. To reproduce the dataset used in the associated study, use the worksheet dat_sem. This sheet contains the cleaned data used for the PLS-SEM analysis. Survey responses were converted into numerical Likert-scale values, quality-control checks were applied, and incomplete observations on the SEM indicators were removed using listwise deletion. The final dataset contains the indicator variables for electronic word-of-mouth, influencer communication, fashion motivation, economic motivation, environmental motivation, attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control, and purchase intention.
