Data for: The asymmetric hydrodynamic structure of a wind-dominated river plume (JGR: Oceans)
Description
This dataset contains the processed observational data used to generate the figures and quantitative analyses presented in the manuscript “The asymmetric hydrodynamic structure of a wind-dominated river plume”, accepted for publication in Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans. The dataset includes salinity, density, and velocity fields collected along multiple transects of the Magdalena River Plume (MRP), together with time series of environmental forcing variables and salinity profiles acquired during the oceanographic cruise MSM112, which surveyed the MRP during October–November 2022. All data are provided in MATLAB (.mat) format. 1. Transect-based data files: The main component of the dataset consists of MATLAB files named according to the transect identifiers listed in Table 1 of the manuscript (e.g., Transect_WE1.mat). These files support the construction of Figures 1, 3–6, and 8, Supplementary Figures S2 and S3, and Table 2 of the manuscript. Each transect file contains quality-controlled ADCP and CTD data, along with calculated water density, gridded onto a common horizontal–vertical grid. The data processing and interpolation procedures are described in Section 3.1 of the manuscript. Each transect file includes the following eight matrices: - Horizontal distance along the transect (km) - Depth (m) - Velocity magnitude (m s⁻¹) - Velocity direction (azimuth, degrees) - Eastward velocity component (m s⁻¹) - Northward velocity component (m s⁻¹) - Salinity (g kg⁻¹) - Density (kg m⁻³) 2. Time-series forcing data: The file data_Figure_2.mat contains the time series used to construct Figure 2 of the manuscript. All variables are provided at their original sampling frequencies. The sources of these environmental forcing data, including the meteorological station, river discharge gauge, and tide gauge, are described in Section 3.1 of the manuscript. This file includes: - Wind speed (m s⁻¹) - Wind direction (azimuth, degrees) - Freshwater discharge (m³ s⁻¹) - Water level (m) 3. Vertical salinity profiles: The file data_Figure_S1.mat contains vertical salinity profiles measured during transects SN-4 and WE1. The data were interpolated to a uniform vertical resolution of 0.1 m. The file includes two matrices, one for each transect, with the following structure: - The first column corresponds to depth (m) - The subsequent columns contain salinity profiles (g kg⁻¹), ordered spatially from north to south for transect SN-4 and from west to east for transect WE1
