Survey Data on the Use, Awareness and Perceived Reliability of DNA Profiling in India’s Criminal Justice System
Description
This dataset contains coded survey responses from 612 participants regarding the awareness, use and perceived reliability of DNA profiling in India’s criminal justice system. The Excel file includes 52 variables: eight demographic and professional variables covering gender, age group, education, professional background, institutional association, professional experience, region and nature of work association, followed by 44 items measuring seven constructs—Awareness of DNA Profiling, Use of DNA Profiling in Criminal Investigation, Perceived Reliability of DNA Evidence, Legal and Procedural Awareness, Institutional Capacity and Training, Ethical and Privacy Concerns, and Overall Perception of DNA Profiling. All construct items were measured on a five-point Likert scale ranging from 1 (Strongly Disagree) to 5 (Strongly Agree). Each row represents one respondent, and no direct personal identifiers are included.

Steps to reproduce
To reproduce the dataset, administer the accompanying structured questionnaire to eligible adult respondents and obtain their informed consent before data collection. Export the collected responses to a spreadsheet, remove incomplete, duplicate or ineligible submissions, and code the valid responses according to the accompanying codebook. Reverse-code negatively worded items where applicable, and examine the data for missing values, invalid entries and coding inconsistencies. Frequencies and percentages can then be calculated for demographic and awareness variables, while descriptive statistics can be generated for perception-based items.
