Cross-Cultural Competence in Tourism and Hospitality: A Case Study of Quintana Roo, Mexico
Description
The phenomenon of economic growth, especially in emerging economies, has driven a change in the composition of international tourism. It is therefore vital to possess the requisite skills to comprehend the impact of culture on human behaviour, thus facilitating an appropriate response to the traveller. The objective of this research is to develop a tool to identify openness, flexibility, awareness and intercultural preparedness. The research focuses on the elements of metacognition and cognition of cultural intelligence that influence the development of empathy in customer service staff in hotels in Quintana Roo. The variables were validated and subjected to a quantitative study using multivariate analysis and inferential statistics. A sample of 77 questionnaires was analysed through simple random sampling for a proportional design, with a Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA) implemented as a discriminatory technique to identify the most significant independent variables. These variables were then subjected to Ordinal Logistic Regression (OLR) analysis as regressors to assess their impact, along with age and work experience, in order to estimate the probabilities for each level of the dependent variable. The results indicated that the inference of age in the sample studied showed a low and almost null incidence on the metacognition and cognition variables, while the years of experience of the tourism staff exerted a significant influence on these variables.
