Description

Declines in cognitive abilities are a common feature of aging and are associated with decreases in quality of life, dependence, and increases in mortality rate. In a randomized clinical trial with parallel design performed in Tehran, 100 elderlies aged 65-75 were randomly assigned to computerized cognitive training group, loving-kindness meditation group, multiple exemplar training group, and control group. All the participants underwent assessments at baseline, after intervention and six-month follow-up. Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination test, and executive functions test were administered. Then, an eight-week (16 sessions) intervention was performed in each experimental group. The results of this study showed that all three interventions of cognitive training, multi exemplar training, and loving-kindness meditation had significant effects on executive functions. However, each of them had different effects on the different variables of these functions and their effect size varies. In the psychological well-being variable, the love-kindness meditation intervention was the most effective intervention and cognitive training did not show a significant effect on this variable. Based on the results, it can be concluded that loving-kindness meditation and multiple exemplar training have a significant effect on psychological well-being and executive functions of elderlies and it is expected to have a positive effect on the quality of life of the elderlies. It is suggested that training the elderly with these interventions can have a positive impact on the elderly’s life and should be incorporated into their daily lives abbreviation of variables: Tower Of Hanoi Task (TOH),Trail Making Task (TMT),Symbol Digit Modality Task (SDMT),The Color and Word Stroop Task (Stroop),Backward Digit Span Task (BDST). the data should open with SPSS program.
