Description

This repository contains replication materials for the manuscript “Who Bears the Hidden Cost of Climate Shocks?” The study examines how Bangladeshi households respond to climate-related shocks, the extent to which coping responses impose economic and welfare costs, and how these responses differ according to social-protection coverage. The empirical analysis uses the Bangladesh Household Income and Expenditure Survey (HIES) 2022 and focuses on households reporting at least one climate-related shock. The final analytical sample contains 2,057 households. Costly coping is examined using a broad indicator that captures potentially welfare-reducing responses, together with more specific coping categories including asset liquidation, credit-based coping, involuntary dietary adjustment, and human-capital or family-disruption responses. The analysis also distinguishes households receiving social-protection benefits from non-recipients and examines the resulting coverage gap among climate-shock-affected households. CHIRPS precipitation data are linked to reported rainfall-related hazards to provide an objective district-month rainfall context and sensitivity check. The statistical analysis includes survey-weighted descriptive comparisons, district and survey-term fixed-effects regression models, district-clustered inference, hazard-specific analyses, and rainfall-concordance sensitivity checks. Social-protection coefficients are interpreted as conditional associations rather than causal effects of assistance. The public replication package contains Stata 14-compatible analysis code, aggregate statistical tables, figures, reference outputs, restricted-input documentation, variable schemas, source-provenance information, validation materials, and reproducibility documentation. Respondent-level and household-level HIES 2022 data and derived household-level analytical files are not redistributed. Researchers wishing to reproduce the complete analysis must obtain authorized access to the required HIES data and place the documented restricted inputs in the specified package locations. The repository reproduces the final analytical workflow from validated HIES/CHIRPS-linked inputs; it does not reconstruct the complete raw-HIES-to-analysis pipeline.

Steps to reproduce

Download and extract the replication ZIP while preserving the folder structure and read README.txt before running the analysis. The replication workflow requires Stata 14.0 or later. Respondent-level and household-level Bangladesh HIES 2022 data are not redistributed with this repository. Researchers wishing to reproduce the complete analysis must obtain authorized access to the required HIES data and provide the three restricted inputs documented in the package: 02_work/phase4_analysis_ready.dta, 02_work/phase4_events_chirps.dta, and 00_raw/HIES_2022/HH_SEC_7A.xlsx. The required variable structure is documented in 05_documentation/RESTRICTED_INPUT_SCHEMA.csv. After placing the authorized files at the specified locations, open Stata, set the working directory to the extracted package root, and run do "00_RUN_REPRODUCTION.do". The workflow reproduces the final descriptive statistics, coping and social-protection analyses, rainfall-concordance sensitivity checks, regression results, and figures. Newly generated outputs are written to 03_output/, while a runtime log is written locally to 04_logs/. Regenerated results can be compared with the frozen aggregate tables and figures in 06_reference_output/. The package reproduces the final Phase-5-to-Phase-10 analytical workflow from validated inputs; it does not reconstruct the complete raw-HIES-to-results data-construction process.
