Description

This study examines the effects of greenwashing behavior and green culture on employees’ environmental behavior, while also investigating the moderating role of green values within organizational settings in Indonesia. A quantitative research approach was employed using primary data collected through an online questionnaire distributed to employees working in companies across Indonesia. The final sample consisted of 265 valid responses from individuals holding staff to director positions. Data were analyzed using SPSS and SmartPLS. The findings reveal that greenwashing behavior does not significantly influence environmental behavior, suggesting that symbolic sustainability claims alone are insufficient to shape employees’ environmentally responsible actions. In contrast, green culture demonstrates a positive and significant effect on environmental behavior, indicating that organizations fostering sustainability-oriented values and practices can effectively encourage pro-environmental conduct among employees. Furthermore, green values do not moderate the relationships between greenwashing behavior and environmental behavior or between green culture and environmental behavior. These findings highlight the importance of cultivating an authentic organizational culture that supports sustainability rather than relying on superficial environmental initiatives. The study contributes to the sustainability management literature by providing empirical evidence from an emerging economy context and offers practical insights for managers and policymakers seeking to strengthen organizational sustainability performance. Additionally, the findings support the advancement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 12 and SDG 13, through the promotion of environmentally responsible behavior within organizations.
