Description

This dataset contains the annual country-level panel and the replication code for the article "Macroeconomic and political correlates of statutory corporate income tax rates in Asian countries: Panel evidence, 2000–2023" (Social Sciences & Humanities Open, manuscript SSHO-D-26-03426). The panel covers 48 Asian jurisdictions observed annually from 2000 to 2023 (1,152 country-years). Variables: statutory corporate income tax rate (%); GDP per capita (current US) ;𝐹𝐷𝐼 𝑛𝑒𝑡 𝑖𝑛𝑓 𝑙𝑜𝑤𝑠 (𝐵𝑜𝑃,𝑐𝑢𝑟𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑈𝑆 );FDI net inflows (BoP, current US); trade openness (exports plus imports, % of GDP); general government gross debt (% of GDP); inflation (consumer prices, annual %); unemployment (% of labour force, ILO modelled estimate); Political Stability . Sources: OECD Corporate Tax Statistics 2024 for Inclusive Framework members and the Tax Foundation worldwide statutory-rate dataset for the other 19 jurisdictions; World Bank World Development Indicators (downloaded 20 September 2024); IMF World Economic Outlook, April 2024 (government debt); World Bank Worldwide Governance Indicators, 2024 update; for Taiwan, which the WDI does not cover, IMF WEO, UNCTAD and DGBAS. The only missing cell is trade openness for Jordan in 2001; the 2001 political-stability value, which the WGI does not publish, is linearly interpolated from 2000 and 2002 at estimation. Fifty-nine country-years with a zero statutory rate (Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates in all years, the Maldives in 2000–2010) are retained in the file and excluded from the main estimation sample, which comprises 1,092 country-years for 46 jurisdictions. Files: Master_Data.xlsx (the raw panel, one row per country-year), Master_Data_estimation_extract.xlsx (the 1,093-row positive-rate extract with logged and interaction variables, as used in the article), and replication_CIT_Asia.py, a Python script that reproduces every table and figure in the article from Master_Data.xlsx, including the sensitivity analyses with zero-rate observations, the inverse-hyperbolic-sine FDI transformation, and alternative treatments of the 2001 political-stability value.
