Dataset of parasitological and pseudoparasitological findings in fecal samples of free-ranging maned wolves (Chrysocyon brachyurus) from Serra da Canastra National Park, Brazil

This dataset contains the primary data generated from the coproparasitological analysis of fecal samples collected from free-ranging maned wolves (Chrysocyon brachyurus) in Serra da Canastra National Park, Minas Gerais, Brazil, between April 2023 and June 2025. It includes information on sample identification, collection date, seasonality, sampling location, macroscopic fecal composition, parasitological findings, and the occurrence of parasitism and pseudoparasitism. Coproparasitological examinations were performed at the Diagnostic Support Laboratory for Parasitic Diseases, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Fluminense Federal University (UFF), using the Sheather centrifugal flotation technique and the Hoffman, Pons and Janer spontaneous sedimentation technique. These data underpin the analyses presented in the associated manuscript and are provided to support transparency, reproducibility, and future research on wildlife parasitology, parasite ecology, and conservation biology.

Steps to reproduce
Free-ranging maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) fecal samples were collected non-invasively between April 2023 and June 2025 along roads and trails in Serra da Canastra National Park, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Fresh feces were identified based on indirect field criteria, including characteristic defecation sites, footprints, fecal morphology, and macroscopic dietary composition. Samples showing evidence of prolonged environmental exposure were excluded. Each sample was georeferenced using a Garmin eTrex® 20x GPS and preserved in sterile containers containing 70% ethanol. Coproparasitological examinations were performed at the Diagnostic Support Laboratory for Parasitic Diseases, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Fluminense Federal University (UFF), using the Sheather centrifugal flotation technique and the Hoffman, Pons and Janer spontaneous sedimentation technique. Three microscope slides were prepared and examined for each sample under light microscopy. Adult nematodes recovered from fecal samples were morphologically identified following standard taxonomic keys. The spreadsheet contains the primary records generated during laboratory analyses, including sample identification, collection date, seasonality, sampling locality, macroscopic fecal composition, coproparasitological findings, and classification of parasitological and pseudoparasitological records. Statistical analyses were performed using BioEstat version 5.3. Detailed laboratory protocols, molecular analyses, and statistical procedures are fully described in the associated manuscript.
