A Light and Modular Glovebox for Hazardous Material Machining

More and more often innovation in a modern context is got by multidisciplinarity. Multidisciplinarity often implies to do different jobs in the same physical place. In such a context, when the matter deals with Hazardous Material (i.e. HazMat from here on) the necessity to isolate the dangerous process arises. To fulfill this requirement a light and modular Glovebox is proposed. Due to its particular design the proposed Glovebox collects a series of advantages: among them the possibility to be assembled “on site”, to be customized around a specific application and to host a robot manipulator inside it. To focus our ideas this general context is here applied to the repair of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics (CFRP). In particular the Glovebox has been employed to execute the scarfing process with the purpose to contain the dangerous dust generated during the job. The scarfing process has already been dealt with in [1] to which the interested reader is addressed. Moreover, an HardwareX paper [2] addressed the tool used for the scarfing. The particular instance of the Glovebox discussed here is easily generalizable to a situation where a dirty job must be done in a clean laboratory. This work is licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0.
