Description

The Ethnoveterinary data were collected to answer four questions: (1) which plant speccies utilized in preparation of remedies for for treating poultry diseases? (2) What are the levels of consensus and theurapeutic potential associated with various plant based remedies used to treat poultry diseases? (3) What methods are employed in the preparation of these plant remedies? (4) How do local communities determine dosage and routes of administration of speciefic plant remedies targeting particular poultry disease? Data was collected through questionnarire survey to poultry keepers and followed by field field work which involved identification of plant species and botanical pressing and identification. The data is compiled in form of self descriptive tables and collection pictures plant species of ethnoveterinary importance.

Steps to reproduce

Step 1: Define Research Objectives/Questions Goal: Document plant-based remedies for poultry diseases Key Questions: Which plant species are used to treat poultry diseases? What are the preparation methods and dosages? What is the consensus (ICF) and healing potential (FL) of these remedies? How are remedies administered? Step 2: Develop proposal and Obtain Ethical Approval Submit research protocols to the Institutional Research Review Committee (IRREC) and Secure informed consent from participants, ensuring confidentiality and voluntary participation. Step 3: Select Study Area Location: Three wards in Dodoma, Tanzania (Zanka, Makutupora, Msalato). Criteria: Semi-arid climate, reliance on poultry farming, and prevalence of ethnoveterinary practices. Step 4: Data Collection A. Sampling Participants: 131 poultry keepers (Using Yamane’s formula for sample size to determine sample size). Method: Cross-sectional design with semi-structured questionnaires. Demographics: Record gender, age, occupation, education level, and ethnoveterinary knowledge B. Field Surveys Plant Identification: Collect voucher specimens with local names (e.g., Aloe secundiflora = AS-001). Botanical Verification: Collaborate with a botanist to confirm species and deposit specimens in a herbarium. C. Ethnobotanical Data Interviews: Document: Plant parts used (leaves, bark). Preparation methods (crushing, grinding, mixing with water). Dosage . Administration routes (oral, external). Treated diseases (Newcastle, fowl cholera, parasites). Step 5: Quantitative Analysis A. Statistical Indices Informant Consensus Factor (ICF): Formula: ICF=Nur−Nt/Nur−1 Measures agreement on plant use for specific diseases (range: 0–1). Fidelity Level (FL): Formula: FL=Np/Nu×100 Assesses healing potential of plants (e.g., Aloe secundiflora = 94.9%). Frequency Index (FI): Formula: FI=Fc/N×100 Ranks plant popularity (e.g., Aloe secundiflora = 60.3%). B. Tools Software: Use R or IBM SPSS for descriptive statistics (percentages, tables) and chi-square tests for demographic comparisons. Step 6: Validate Findings Focus Groups: Conduct discussions to verify preparation methods (e.g., starving chickens before oral administration). Triangulation: Cross-check data with literature (e.g., compare Azadirachta indica’s use in other regions). Step 7: Document Results Tables/Figures: such as Table 2: List plants with frequency indices (e.g., Azadirachta indica = 25.2%). Table 3: Detail preparation modes (e.g., crushing bark for Newcastle disease).
