Steps to reproduce

For gut microbiota DNA isolation, we used the Masterpure DNA isolation kit with a lysozyme step for Gram-positive bacteria, extracting DNA from the same samples as in the RNAseq experiment (Tables S1 and S2). Extractions were performed under a UV-irradiated clean hood. We also isolated DNA from two dissection controls and two empty Eppendorf tubes ("DNA extraction control"). Samples were sent to StarSeq (Mainz, Germany) for amplicon sequencing of the V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene (primer sequence: 515F: GTGYCAGCMGCCGCGGTAA, 806bR: GGACTACNVGGGTWTCTAAT). Additionally, two negative controls and one ZymoBIOMICS microbial DNA standard (positive control) were sequenced.
