This dataset contains the X-ray diffraction (XRD) and 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy data used in the study of a pre-Hispanic funerary combustion structure excavated at the Canal Parque Telemedellín archaeological site (Medellín, Colombia). The repository includes accessible CSV files, metadata, and supplementary documentation corresponding to samples M1, M2, and M3 analyzed at 300 K and 77 K.

Steps to reproduce

The datasets were generated during the archaeometric investigation of a pre-Hispanic funerary combustion structure excavated at the Canal Parque Telemedellín archaeological site in Medellín, Colombia. Three representative wall samples were selected for analysis: M1 (central area of the structure), M2 (eastern wall), and M3 (western wall). X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses were performed using a Bruker D8 Focus diffractometer equipped with a Co-anode X-ray tube. Measurements were collected over a 2θ range of 10°–94° using a step size of 0.0262° and a counting time of 50 s per step. Mineral phases were identified using HighScore software version 5.2. The accessible datasets provided in this repository were generated by converting the original diffraction files into tabulated formats containing diffraction angle (2θ) and intensity values. 57Fe Mössbauer spectra were acquired in transmission geometry using a 57Co/Rh radioactive source mounted on an electromagnetic drive system. Measurements were performed at 300 K and 77 K using a liquid-nitrogen cryostat. Powdered samples containing approximately 5 mg Fe cm−2 were analyzed. Spectral fitting was carried out using the MOSFIT software package, employing quadrupole doublets and magnetic sextets with Lorentzian line shapes and hyperfine field distributions. Isomer shifts were referenced to α-Fe at room temperature. The repository contains accessible CSV files derived from the original acquisition files, together with supplementary documentation describing sample identification, measurement conditions, and file structure. The original data correspond to samples M1, M2, and M3 analyzed by XRD and Mössbauer spectroscopy at both room temperature and 77 K. These datasets support the results reported in the associated manuscript entitled “Mineralogical and Mössbauer Evidence for High-Temperature Funerary Pyrotechnology in Pre-Hispanic Medellín, Colombia”.
