Element concentrations of sediment samples from two river basins on Loess Plateau in China
Description
These data are the mean element concentrations and standard deviations of sediment samples collected from two river basins (Huangfuchuan and Gushanchuan) on the Loess Plateau in China. They are used for a sediment fingerprinting study. The sediment samples include seven and six source samples of the loess and Pisha strata, respectively, in the two river basins, and eight and four target samples of the sediment deposits on the river bed and low flood lands close to the outlets of the Huangfuchuan and Gushanchuan rivers, respectively. Each of source and target sediment samples was subsampled for particle size and geochemical analyses. The subsamples for geochemical analysis were dry sieved using a 63-μm sieve before laboratory analysis in consideration of the < 63 μm fraction dominating the load of the study river and having been used in most fingerprinting studies. After a standard pretreatment of each subsample, the concentrations of 24 elements were measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), and the grain size composition was measured using the Malvern 2000 laser granulometer with a diameter measurement range of 0.01-2000 μm. The element concentrations were corrected using particle size data and a method given in the study by Ma et al. (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.geomorph.2025.109611), and their means and standard deviations were computed and listed in the two tables respectively for the Huangfuchuan and Gushanchuan rivers.
