Description

Introduction: Peripheral intravenous catheters are widely used in hospital care. However, device-related complications can lead to unplanned removal, interruption of intravenous therapy, and compromised patient safety. Objective: To analyze the reasons for peripheral intravenous catheter removal and the association between dwell time and the occurrence of complications. Materials and Methods: A prospective, descriptive, observational study involving 200 hospitalized adults was conducted between September and November 2023. Participants were monitored from catheter insertion until removal. The primary outcome was the reason for removal, classified as removal due to complications or other causes. Descriptive and inferential analyses were performed using Pearson's chi-square test and the odds ratio (OR), with a 95% confidence interval.
